Job Title: Head Ranger – Estate Management

Location: Kelburn Castle and Country Centre, Fairlie, near Largs, North Ayrshire

Salary: Commensurate with experience

Description:

Kelburn Estate is looking for an experienced and enthusiastic team leader with excellent practical and organisational skills. You will be directly responsible for the ranger team at Kelburn, focusing specifically on the countryside management and maintenance of the estate. This is a diverse role which involves co-planning and executing an organised estate maintenance plan.  

Full-time for a five day week 9am-5pm

Main duties:

  1. To liaise directly with the Estate, Centre and Office managers in assisting with all aspects of estate management and maintenance.
  2. To ensure all parts of the Kelburn Country Centre are accessible to the public and are responsible for maintaining, as examples, woodland areas, paths, step seats, bridges, signs and signposts, wooden fences, etc.
  3. Assisting with Grant Funding applications and submitting reports when necessary
  4. Supervising seasonal rangers and volunteers, including delivering training where possible.
  5. Supporting daily routine operations, Litter / loos / parking / etc if needed
  6. Support the country centre manager in monitoring safety of facilities adventure play areas etc.
  7. Working with the estate team to carry out essential works where necessary
  8. Assisting with countryside management efforts towards drawing up a forest management plan.
  9. To ensure correct procedures are carried out regarding accidents to staff/clients and appropriate accident forms filled in according to Health & Safety guidelines.
  10. Assisting the gamekeeper on all aspects of shoot management, including training on breeding game birds, planning and organizing shoots, clearing woodland, protecting game and controlling predators and keeping record of what is shot or caught

6.       Qualification in Countryside Management / Recreation or equivalent or substantial experience in a relevant subject

Desired Experience:

1.       Relevant and practical experience in countryside management including access & recreation management.

2.       Demonstrable experience of managing and coordinating staff and volunteers.

3.       Relevant NPT Certificates; particularly chainsaw are desirable.

4.       Previous experience dealing with Scottish Natural Heritage funding schemes and reporting a plus.

Other Requirements:

1.       Current Driving License

2.       Subject to occupational health approval, is able to meet the physical demands of the post.

3.       A commitment to and enthusiasm for developing ranger services at Kelburn.

4.       Willingness to work regular evenings, weekends, and public holidays if required.

 


Job Title: Seasonal Countryside Ranger (Volunteer)

Location: Kelburn Country Centre, Fairlie, near Largs, North Ayrshire

 

Closing Date: 14th  June 2018

Start Date: ASAP

Fulltime and Seasonal (ASAP – Oct) for a five day week 9am-6pm

 

Description:

 

An enthusiastic and highly motivated countryside volunteer ranger is required to join the established team to help with all aspects of practical countryside management and directly support the Head Ranger. This seasonal position will serve as part of our Countryside Ranger Service, which plays a fundamental role in enhancing and protecting Kelburn’s countryside, whilst encouraging greater public understanding and enjoyment of it.   Candidates should have an interest in working outdoors in all conditions.  The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate some knowledge of natural history and will need to be friendly with a flexible attitude to work. The ideal candidate will also be practically minded and be able to roll up your sleeves and undertake diverse maintenance tasks.   The role comes with a modest weekly stipend for food and accommodation will be provided for the right candidate.

 

Main duties.

  1. Supporting the Head Ranger and working directly with the Centre / Office managers, you’ll assist in all aspects of park and estate management.
  2. Undertaking practical maintenance tasks all over the estate, including the glen and path maintenance.
  3. Physical outdoor work in all weathers.
  4. Being responsible for the presentation of facilities / exhibition areas.
  5. Supporting daily routine operations, Litter / loos / etc
  6. Monitoring safety of facilities adventure play areas etc.
