Seasonal Volunteer Ranger (Facilities)

Location: Kelburn Country Centre, Fairlie, near Largs, North Ayrshire

Start date: ASAP

Seasonal Fulltime position: Ends Oct 31st 2017.  5 days a week with flexible hours and working weekends. The business operates 7 days a week.

Salary:  This is a volunteer position which will include accommodation and weekly stipend.

Description: We have a seasonal volunteer position (residential - a semi furnished room in a shared, non-smoking, house with a resident cat) available for a practical and well organised individual. You need to have a good work ethic ensuring punctuality, productivity, self motivation and ability to act on initiative. With the variation offered at Kelburn it is essential to be a team player and be willing to get involved as required to meet the demands of the business.

The role of our Facilities Ranger will be to support the day to day servicing of the Country Centre and wider estate which includes our glamping and camping area and additional onsite facilities. A level of physical fitness is required.

Main Duties

·         Housekeeping of yurts: complete unit changeover keeping high standards of cleanliness and presentation.

·         Turnaround of bed linen, washing, drying and storage.

·         Stock management of items, furnishings and firewood provisions.

·         Cleaning and management of compost toilet.

·         Coordinate reservations on glamping, bell tents & camping with Country Centre manager.

·         Erect and dismantle bell tents as required.  Clean and store.

·         Campsite maintenance checking paths, fire pits, litter, water points, chemical toilet disposal signage and presentation.

·         Litter management: daily litter pick, emptying of bins and monitoring refuse sites.

·         Work alongside the Event, Volunteer and Maintenance rangers with repairs, site safety & site presentation.

·         Practical & physical outdoor work in all weathers, including small animal husbandry.

Job Title: Ranger – Countryside Management and Estate Maintenance

Location: Kelburn Castle and Country Centre, Fairlie, near Largs, North Ayrshire

Kelburn is looking for an experienced and enthusiastic ranger with excellent practical and organisational skills. You will serve an important role within the Kelburn team, focusing specifically on the countryside management and maintenance of the estate. This is a diverse role which involves supporting multiple aspects of the estate’s operations and businesses, including a heavily visited country centre, events, private functions and weddings, game shoots, festivals and much more. Housing may also be available for the right candidate.  The role is full-time for a five day week 9am-6pm.

Main duties:

  1. To liaise directly with the Estate, Centre and Office managers in assisting with all aspects of estate management and maintenance, including forestry
  2. To ensure all parts of the Kelburn Country Centre are accessible to the public and are responsible for maintaining, as examples, woodland areas, paths, step seats, bridges, signs and signposts, wooden fences, etc.
  3. Supervising seasonal volunteers where necessary
  4. Supporting daily routine operations, Litter / loos / parking / etc as required
  5. Support the country centre manager in monitoring safety of facilities adventure play areas etc.
  6. Working with the estate management team to carry out essential works where necessary, including support for forestry, game shoots, private functions and festivals/events

Desired Skills:

1.       A good team player with the ability to promote joint team working

2.       Self- motivated, organised and results orientated

3.       Able to demonstrate personal confidence in a maintenance role

4.       Qualification in Countryside Management / Recreation or equivalent or substantial experience in a relevant subject

Desired Experience:

1.       Relevant and practical experience in countryside management including access & recreation management.

2.       Demonstrable experience of working in teams and by yourself.

3.       Relevant NPT Certificates; particularly chainsaw are desirable.

Other Requirements:

1.       Current Driving License

2.       Subject to occupational health approval, is able to meet the physical demands of the post.

3.       A commitment to and enthusiasm for developing ranger services at Kelburn.

4.       Willingness to work regular evenings, weekends, and public holidays if required.
