Forest School is an all inclusive process that:
- builds on an individual’s innate motivation and positive attitude to
learning
- offers participants opportunities to take risks, make choices and initiate
learning
- maximises the year round learning potential of local woodland
- improves understanding, appreciation and care for the natural environment
- is organised and run by qualified professional Forest School leaders
Based on a Scandinavian idea, Forest School is a long term educational programme.
The Forest School ethos focuses on learning styles that maximise the emotional, social and developmental benefits of education. Participants work outdoors with qualified practitioners and teachers. Learning and teaching strategies are used to foster independence and develop language and communication skills.
Forest School enhances and complements mainstream education, offering an alternative curriculum in an outdoor context.
Several elements differentiate Forest School from many other outdoor education activities and approaches. Whilst some of these are not unique, when brought together they provide an experience for the child that they would not get elsewhere.
The key features of Forest School are:
- Use of the same woodland or ‘wild’ setting
- Curriculum linked learning
- Freedom to explore using multiple senses
- Regular contact for the user over an extended period of time
- A high adult to pupil ratio
Our “Woodland Workout” Walk uses Forest School ideas as inspiration.
“Forest School Taster Days” can also be organised for schools Sept – March. Taster Days involve a wider range of Environmental activities and hands on activities in a woodland setting. Pupils and teachers spend all day in the outdoors!
“Taster Day Introductory Activities” can also be organised for Teachers Sept - March
