Take a VIP tour through the 900-year history of our Castle, from its origins and architectural additions to its varied and eclectic inhabitants. Learn about the past Earls of Glasgow, each with their own intriguing history. Kelburn Castle continues to evolve and, as part of the tour, you’ll be informed on how previous generations lived, and how the current Restoration Project is crucial to maintaining the structural integrity for future generations. This tour will offer the public a peek into ‘never seen before’ rooms.

The tour will conclude with light refreshments in the Dining Room – including cakes and soup. The Dining Room, which was built in the Victorian era by the 6th Earl of Glasgow and still retains its original Morris wallpaper, overlooks the Firth of the Clyde and its islands. Our Guide will be on call throughout the refreshments to answer any questions you may have.

Extend your day with the self-led ‘History Trail’, and follow the information boards up through the Glen towards ‘The Monument’ and down towards the Walled Garden. Return to the Country Centre where you can read the ‘cartoon story’ of the Castle, drawn by British artist Don Aldridge and situated in the Old Byre. Allow yourself an extra 45 minutes for the above self-guided walk or 20 minutes if viewing the Walled Garden.

Important Information
  • The tour starts from the Main Office and is outside for the first 15 minutes. Please arrive 10 minutes before tour time and park in main car park then check in at Main Office.
  • Your Guide will walk you over to the Castle via our main bridge, with  steps on both sides, so please wear suitable footwear and warm clothes.
  • Unfortunately, due to the nature of the external terrain and internal stairs, we cannot cater for those with reduced mobility or in wheelchairs.
  • Light refreshments will include a warm bowl of home made soup, a selection of cakes plus tea and coffee. Service and seating time will be estimated at 45 minutes.
  • Not suitable for children under 10.
  • Toilets are available in the Country Centre and at the end of the tour in the Castle.
  • As the Castle is a private home, we ask for no internal photography or dogs on the tour.
  • The Castle Restoration Project is ongoing so please note there is external scaffolding around the front entrance (but not covering the ‘Graffiti’), and internal wooden supports for exposed (but very interesting!) centuries old walls
